The Promise of Spring

What a difference a week makes! The air smells like spring this morning – crisp and clean with a hint of warm sun. You know that smell, don’t you? I make my way down the driveway, just as the morning sun bids farewell to an almost full moon, still visible through the bare branches of the trees. Can you see it?

In the backyard the snow is receding from the edges by the fence. There are patches of exposed “winter” grass, yellow and matted. Hey, bluebirds – there is nesting material available! The buds on the cherry tree are beginning to take shape. In the coming weeks they will swell and burst forth into a glorious celebration of pink and white. Close your eyes and imagine.

A male cardinal is breakfasting at the feeder, filling his bright orange beak with sunflower seeds. His mate is close by, waiting. Sparrows, juncos, and chickadees join him for the feast. Listen – you can hear the calls of their feathered friends as the day begins.

The promise of spring surrounds me.

I can see it! Your sensory description brings spring closer. Hooray! I love how the snow is receding and the cardinal is feasting nearby. The joys of spring.

I was thinking the same thing this morning...but most of the snow is stubbornly staying. The birds are out, singing, the air is warm but crisp...I could fill the bird feeder this morning without my earmuffs and gloves! Spring is in the air!.

Rose,
Thank you for savoring and capturing such a delightful morning with vivid detail -- the gathering at your bird feeder sounds like a town meeting with the Cardinal leading the way -- a lovely poetic piece.
Thank you!

The emergence of spring in the US is far more dramatic than spring in Australia. Your post took me back to my time in NYC. Your description of setting immediately placed me back there. I loved the way spring burst open so suddenly.

I love the picture you painted. My favorite line was about the cherry tree buds that "swell and burst forth into a glorious celebration of pink and white". I have a flowering crab apple tree in my backyard. The moment you painted is the one I wait for every spring!
