A Moment in Summer

I remember Ralph and I taking a walk to the little garden by the bay in Ship Bottom to watch the sun sink into the water. It was a particularly cool day for August, and a light breeze tickled my nose with a salty scent. As we sat on the bench, I looked at a glorious strawberry-melon sunset that gleamed with hints of violet.  A sky smeared with so much color that it took my breath away!

I sat and waited for the sun to disappear. At first, ever-so-slowly, but all of a sudden, it was gone.  It seemed as if the water should have hissed and sizzled. I laughed out loud, thinking about the sun dropping into the bay like an Alka-Seltzer tablet dropped into a glass of water!

When the sky turned to twilight, we came away with a sense of wonder and peace.  Then laughter bubbled up inside me. Ralph looked at me in surprise. What was so funny?   “Nothing, really,” I replied.  The picture inside my mind’s eye – the fiery sun sinking into the water that bubbled and hissed until the sun was completely dissolved!

We return every summer to Long Beach Island. My husband loves to sit on the beach and swim in the ocean. I like to take long walks with the Corgis and read lots of books.  We both enjoy our stroll to the ocean early in the morning and to the bay just before sunset. Magnificent views!  Peaceful moments! Time together!  Every day in summer is eaten away like an ice-cream sundae, leaving sweet memories lingering on our taste buds.

Love having Ralph in my morning -- sharing my cup of coffee after a morning run with the two of you!. Beautiful piece about enjoying quiet moments together... and of course I got to hear your laugh again. I can't get enough of your wonderful laugh! I will never look at a sunset again without thinking of you and smiling.

Hi, Clare. You will have to bring Tammy this summer in August for a writing writing on LBI. We have the little house for six weeks. We will pick you up at Philadelphia Airport. Day trip to Cape May as well!

Incredible descriptive writing, Lynn. Love the comparisons to Alka-Seltzer and an ice cream sundae. I can see that "strawberry-melon" sun. You inspire! Have a good day.

I love your description of the sun setting like an alka seltzer tablet that should be sizzling in the ocean. It's so true!!

Love this slice! My favorite parts..."a glorious strawberry-melon sunset that gleamed with hints of violet. A sky smeared with so much color that it took my breath away!" and "sun dropping into the bay like an Alka-Seltzer tablet dropped into a glass of water." Loved the imagery!!!

Beautiful images and a great picture of you and Ralph! Thinking of Alka-seltzer would make me laugh, too.

Your slice was filled with beautiful imagery. You painted the sunset vividly and then added that wonderful original image of an Alka Seltzer tablet dissolving into the sea. Ahhhhh...I think I had a brief sweet taste of summer. Thanks.

My favorite description? "Glorious strawberry-melon sunset." It is such a specific moment in the elapse of a sunset, but I know EXACTLY what moment it is...

l know Ralph loves the shore, but this shows that you both do. Thanks for such vivid descriptions. I can't wait for summer myself.

It's really hard to find a better place than one that gives you both sunrises and sunsets over the water. I never, never tire of the ocean and walks along the "shore" (as I said in my young years in NJ) or "beach" (as I said when I lived in HI) or "coast" (as I now say in OR) .

Lynne loves to write in the early morning hours, especially in warm weather when she can sit outside on the patio.  After a walk with her three Welsh Corgis, her mind is cleared and her spirit is inspired by the choir of birds in nearby bushes and trrees.
