Advice to Young Poets

Picture
I had a poem inside my head,
An idea from all I’d read.
It swirled around and grew and grew,
Had rhyme, rhythm, and humor, too!

Tasted sweet and rang out loud,
Thoughts collecting in a crowd.
Followed me throughout my day,
This little voice had much to say!

And when I finally found some time,
I opened my notebook to draft this rhyme.
Grasping my pen to write it down
My smiling face soon turned to frown.

I concentrated and searched my mind,
And yet no poem could I seem to find;
For I had waited all too long
To capture the verses of this song.

So, poets, please take this advice –
Don’t put poetic thoughts on ice!
Keep a notebook close by your side
And let your poems there reside.

For if you wait too long to write,
Your poems will ascend in flight.
Like graceful birds, they’ll fly away,
But in a notebook, they will STAY!

What a great poem that rings so true. Sometimes those poems unfold in my head when I least expect it and I'm scrambling to capture them before they fly away!

Wow! This is so impressive! I can relate to your having an idea in your head all day and then once sitting down to write - it's gone. Love this! Thank you for sharing!

Maybe that's my problem with poetry! I love your advice and will take it to heart. I tried poetry for my slice today - not my comfort zone, but I am giving it a go! Once I got going it was not too bad, but I interesting needed rhyme to scaffold me. Many people say it makes it harder but I found rhyme made it easier for me.

Excellent advice. That has happened to me more than once...and not just with poetry!

I bought myself a new notebook just yesterday, along with some new short and colorful pens! I wrote last night and then jotted a poem. It was fun getting words down on paper. I don't always do my writing this way, but when I have a poem popping, I write it anywhere I can! You just have to. It will not stay put! You are so right!

"Followed me throughout my day,

Oh, I know this voice well. Comments, and chatters, and offers witty words, all day, only to escape when finally paper and pen are retrieved. You've offered sage advice to all writers, delivered in a delightfully engaging poem!

Lynne loves to write in the early morning hours, especially in warm weather when she can sit outside on the patio.  After a walk with her three Welsh Corgis, her mind is cleared and her spirit is inspired by the choir of birds in nearby bushes and trrees.
