Morning Symphony

I’ve been reading and recording in my notebook at least one poem a day during April. Most of the poems (probably 95%) are from Mary Oliver. Her focus on the natural world and her ability to find the extraordinary in the ordinary and  record her thoughts in the most eloquent of ways have captivated me this month. So, on this last Tuesday in April, I used her influence, her mentorship, to craft a poem of my own. For my poem “Morning Symphony” I first read and         reread Mary Oliver’s poem “The Wren” as well as Birdsongs by Betsy Franco. Then I dug into my musical background and listed as many musical terms as I could think of. Then I listened…and listened…and listened, as each morning I was greeted with song.

                                                                            Morning Symphony

                                                                            The sun rises
                                                                            and the choir begins
                                                                            a symphony of
                                                                                  chips and chirps
                                                                                         whistles and warbles
                                                                                                 trills and tweets
each cadenza a song of praise,
                                                                             thankful for this new day.

Lovely! I am with you about Mary Oliver. For "poem in your pocket day" I carried around "The Journey" one of my favorites.
Your poem captures the essence of morning birdsong. It really is a symphony. Thank you.

Rose, love the poem. You have really captured the symphony the birds compose each morning. I enjoy listening to them around our house. Their songs just seem to magically chase the blues away.

I like the "symphony" very much, and the idea of mentoring for yourself this time.

Thanks for introducing me to a new poet. I love the natural world and am going to look up her work. Your poem makes me feel at peace.

Rose, I enjoyed reading your poem and it reminded me that last year my gallery was called Spring's Symphony. This year it is Spring's Seeds but this poem would fit nicely. Are you interested in offering it? I need a photo to go with it for an #imagepoem. See last year's gallery at http://beyondliteracylink.blogspot.com/2015/07/springs-symphony-unveiled.html

You've listened with a poet's ear to create this wonderful poem. The birds truly do usher in a new day with delightful songs.

Rose - this is so beautiful. There are birds tweeting outside my window -- your poem caused me to pause, notice and appreciate the symphony. I love running in the early morning -- the sounds are so perfect. I will think of your poem on my morning runs! Thank you
Clare

Your poem is wonderful, Rose. I just started to walk each day and thinking about hearing the sounds of the birds provides a big incentive to put on my sneakers. I'll think of this poem as I walk. Thanks!

Beautifully structured and crafted, Rose. I love this line for its musicality:
each cadenza a song of praise
