How Are the Bluebirds?

Some say the robin is the harbinger of spring, but to me it’s the bluebird. It’s usually sometime in February or early March when I first spy that flash of blue and know that spring is just around the corner. But this year was different – the bluebirds stayed! I had to replenish my supply of mealworms…several times. Whole families of bluebirds would crowd around the feeder, their bodies getting plumper and plumper.

Yesterday, in the snowstorm, I began to worry. I kept watch but didn’t see them. Then, in the late afternoon just as the storm was winding down, I spied two birds by the entrance to one of the houses – one inside looking out and one outside looking in. Since they only use the houses to nest, I wondered what was going on. I’m hoping whatever was inside was mostly finished, since finding soft grass would surely be an almost impossible task for a few days or weeks. This morning I trudged out through the snow and tried to peek inside the house, but it was frozen shut.

Right now I am watching…waiting. Oh! Here comes a bluebird to the mealworm feeder. He is off! I have to trust that nature will provide.

We have a little house wren that peeks in the sliding glass door if the feeder gets too low. It's as if he's saying, "Hurry it up, it's cold out here!" Our cardinals have been visiting, too.

Mealworm feeder? I've never heard of such a think! New learning for me. Our bluebirds love the red berries on the holly shrubs. Every winter they come to pick the bushes clean. I love their bright color against the white snow.

I wonder what made them stick around this winter of all winters?

I, like Tara, don't understand why they chose to stay this winter? Interesting.

I have no idea why they stayed. Maybe they figured there would be a sure supply of food.

You've got me worried about those bluebirds - love the wisdom at the end!
