Out of the Mouths of Babes

I hesitated to share this conversation that I recently had with a first grader, but it was just too funny – a perfect slice, I think. I did change his name, however.

Having a brief conversation when starting a conference helps me get to know the child a little and hopefully puts them at ease. As Jake approached the table for his conference, I noticed some writing on his T-shirt and thought that might be a good opener.

Me:      What’s that on your shirt, Jake?
Jake (pointing proudly):      It says My mom is inked and she is awesome.
Me:      Oh. She has tattoos?
Jake:   Oh yeah. She has a lot! She has bubbles on her (hand down his shirt)…on
her…on her…you know…boobs. And she has a bee on her (pointing to his
bottom)…on her…on her…on her butt. She’s got a butterfly there, too.
Me (thinking I didn’t have to worry about putting him at ease and that we could probably
move on now): Oh, that’s interesting.
Jake:   You should get one!
Me:      Really? Don’t you think I’m too old?
Jake:   No. You can do it!
Me:      Hmmm…I’ll have to think about that.

I loved him immediately.

I'm sorry that Jake knows there are tattoos in those places on mom's body. Oh my, what a different world!

"Jake" sounds very at ease. When are you getting your tattoo, Rose?

Haaa! Let us know if you take his advice! I love the candid conversations that often occur when conferring. (hmmm...more alliteration than I had intended!) It's that comfort level and sense of relationship that helps our writers trust that we are there for them. What a fun slice!

Quite a funny story! I want to know if you decide on a tattoo! I have found that kindergarten and first grade children are very honest and speak their mind - delightful! If there is a Part 2 of this story - Rose Gets a Tattoo - please post on Slice of Life!

I loved it! I don't know why but my students started a 20 minute conversation about tattoos one day. After I went to my boss and told him what happened. I told him that I wasn't sure that there were standards that covered that. He replied that it was covered by an art standard. :) I was worried about getting phone calls.

That was too funny - loved the fact that Jake didn't have to worry too much about terminology!

I could tell he didn't want to say the words but he didn't know what else to call those parts. Too funny!

What a hoot! You will remember this conversation for years to come. I can't wait to see what kind of tatoo you get. I hope you slice about it.

Such an interesting lead in for a conference - I wish his mom had tattoos somewhere else for him to see but it did give him something to talk about.

Oh my goodness! That boy is well informed, but definitely a mini charmer. Those are the moments that are my favorite. The moments where you get to see a real, genuine part of the child. Thanks for sharing!

Well, I think a rose would be appropriate. Let us know if you ever place one somewhere. I don't need to know where it is.
