Time To Reflect

This morning I returned to my first post where I listed the pros and cons of joining the March SOL challenge, the one where everything in the con list revolved around fear and I realized I had so much more to gain by joining. Today I can think back to all the days in March and know I made the right decision. Since I always ask teachers and students to reflect on what they learned, I thought it appropriate that I do that today.

By participating in March SOL15 I learned

…that the Slice of Life writing community is respectful, caring, and supportive (but I
                                                already knew that
…that others share the similar struggles in life, family, work
…that the more I read, commented, and wrote, the more confident I became as a writer
…that it didn’t matter if not every post was great. In fact, some of the slices where I really hesitated before hitting that                   “post” button brought the most heartfelt comments.
…that if you take the time to notice the ordinary things in life and contemplate on its wonders and happenings, you will                  always have something to write about.

I think it’s also important to create a personal writing identity by reflecting on what we know or learned about ourselves as a writer. We ask kids to do this all the time, and sometimes it’s not so easy.

By participating in March SOL15 I learned
…that I can find the time to write. Every. Day.
…that listing is my preferred way to brainstorm
…that sometimes I write very long sentences
…that I am most interested in the kinds of structures other writers try out - I like to think about how writing is                        organized.
…that I reread my writing…a lot. It helps me to keep the words and ideas flowing.

Thank you to everyone who organized and kept the challenge running so smoothy.
Thank you to everyone who read my posts, gave encouragement, and left thoughtful comments.
Thank you to everyone for the ideas you sparked, the thoughts you shared, and the community you created.

See you on Tuesdays!

Rose, I am so glad you took the challenge. I have enjoyed reading your posts. I just got notification from our site director that you and Lynne are going to be at Penn State Harrisburg. I am going to see if I can make it.

Rose, it's so true that we ask our students and other teachers to reflect, but it's just as important that we do so ourselves. I enjoyed the way you reflected on your overall experience with the challenge, and what you learned about yourself as a writer.

So glad you joined, and got so much out of it! I really enjoyed reading your posts this month; I learned from you so much about how to think about a single object, or moment, and let it guide my thinking and writing. Congratulations!

Rose, I must admit I was a bit awestruck when I saw you were here. I have hard copies of your books, after all! :) That was just at first because (as this slice demonstrates )your openness, vulnerability and participation show your willingness to grow as a writer. That is a great motivator for me. Thank you. During my past 4 years of writing here I have discovered that I am a writer, too! Our writing community confirms it!

This is just the kind of reflection I'll be asking my student slicers to do. Thanks for giving me another mentor text.

Rose, I so glad that you jumped in, even though you hesitated at first. You are held in such high esteem for so many of us because we use your books to develop writers. Your words make a difference whether you are writing about something from your junk drawer or publishing a professional book. I'm glad I can say you are a friend.

Thank you for joining with us. Like many others in this community have said, your books help me so much in the classroom. I have enjoyed many times with student writers that started with a Your Turn idea. This month I've enjoyed just reading your slices along with so many others.

These words of yours resonated with me tonight: "I learned.....that if you take the time to notice the ordinary things in life and contemplate on its wonders and happenings, you will always have something to write about." I don't think I could say this any better!

I found myself nodding my head in agreement with so many of your reflections (I like long sentences, too). And rereading my writing out loud? Guilty. My son walked in on my writing one of my slices a few days ago and asked me why I was talking to myself. :)
