Wedding Wonder

On Friday morning the first thing I read when I opened my computer was a Facebook post from my son. He had posted a picture of us that was taken more than thirty years ago – him sitting on my lap, both of us smiling into the camera – with the comment “Looking forward to the mother and child reunion this weekend.” He would be married on Saturday, and he had chosen the Paul Simon song “Mother and Child Reunion” as the song we would dance to. Tears – joyous tears – spilled down my cheeks, and I was filled with a love I think only a mother could know.

I have been to many weddings, and I knew this one would be special, but I never realized just how special. Love and happiness filled the air everywhere we went. Brian and Jane had planned a joyous event that celebrated "them." Family, old friends, and new friends gathered together with this common bond – my son and his special bride. Allan, my husband, and I were bursting with pride. Over the years we had our ups and downs with our son as most parents do, but somehow I always knew he would land on his feet.

Of course the setting helped to make the day special, too. The event was held in Brooklyn, with pictures taken under the Brooklyn Bridge and the surrounding neighborhood. With the New York skyline under a clear blue sky, the backdrop was perfect.

And somehow, when it came time for our dance together, I didn’t cry. I just enjoyed the moment and the wonder of it all, as so many memories filled my heart. Love you, Brian. You will be in my heart forever.

Congrats on your son's marriage. What a special time for all of you. LOVE that photo of you hugging him. That's one to treasure!

Hope to see more pics when I see you next month in Honesdale.

Sweet moment indeed! I'm glad you shared this special day with us. It seems you have a very thoughtful son, choosing just the right music for your dance!

I know of the joy you write. My son's wedding was just as perfect as your son's. The only difference is we were in the Sierra Nevada mountains instead. I love seeing the man my son as grown to be, just as you do.

I love the song your son chose for the mother and son dance...and then for you to see that picture of you and Brian when he was a child, and his comment about being reunited in a week. How thoughtful. The picture shows the joy in your face. So glad the wedding was all and more than you expected. Jackie http://familytrove.blogspot.com/

Now I am crying… I have two sons and you projected me into the future. My oldest just started high school and each day feels so fleeting. Your slice hit home with the feeling I have been struggling with these past few weeks. Thanks for sharing and letting me know you still have them even when they are gone.

They will always be your little boys, even when they are grown. The relationship just changes. I love spending time with both of my adult children.
